Hi there,
Welcome to the March edition of Bluebird Leadership's Flight Path, a monthly destination for leadership insights, recommendations, and updates to help navigate your journey towards leadership success. To all our new subscribers, a warm welcome - I'm truly delighted to have you on board.
Resilience is a topic that I am very passionate about, and it is a cornerstone of competitive advantage for leadership performance. While some of us have a stronger resilience baseline due to life’s circumstances, it is a skill that can be cultivated through daily habits to manage stress and prevent burnout.
According to Gallup, burnout has emerged as a pervasive issue in today's global workforce. Shockingly, 28% of workers report feeling burned out "very often" or "always," highlighting the urgent need for effective stress management techniques. Fighting stress and burnout is something that we all must do at some point, as only 24% report that they “rarely” or “never” feel burned out at work.
In this edition, we'll explore practical strategies to bolster your resilience, manage stress, and prevent burnout.
Cultivating a resilience practice
March was a testing period for me personally, as a former adversary, an autoimmune disease returned after 12 years of remission. While Graves Disease is not life threatening, the symptoms are unpleasant (and the treatment even worse), it can be easy to spiral into a negative headspace. It's moments like these that put our resilience to the test.
However, through consistent daily practices and a determined mindset, I've been able to navigate this setback with resilience cultivated over months and years.
Resilience is typically defined as the capacity to recover (and become stronger) in the face of adversity. Resilience is not a trampoline, where you’re down one moment and then bounce back up. It’s more like climbing a mountain (sometimes without a trail map). It takes time, strength, and help from the people around you. You will experience setbacks along the way and eventually you reach the summit and look back at how far you’ve come. Read more in this article.
